RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Determination of the correlationsbetween composition, structure ferroelectric, ion-conducting and nonlinearoptic properties of crystals as the scientific base for design and synthesis ofinorganic compounds with required properties.

MAIN OBJECTSUNDER INVESTIGATION IN THE RECENT YEARS

Complex tellurites and selenites of bismuth and rare earth elements (REE), complexoxohalogenides and oxochalkogenides.

Large family of layered oxyhalogeniges of Bi(REE)-Te belonging to a new type was discovered and investigated. This family has a high percentage of compounds with noncentrosymmetricstructures. Among them the phases were found having high nonlinear opticparameters and unique combination of piezoelectric and pyroelectric parametersadvantageous for pyroelectric applications.
The correlations between the composition and the structure were determined forthe phases in this group.
With the help of planned heterovalent substitution ofBi or REE atoms in their fluorite-like oxofluorides, new anion-conductingphases with wide hom*ogenity regions were obtained. The correlation between nonstoichiometry andtransport characteristics of these solid solutions were determined.
Current interests include design, synthesis, crystallographic and SHGcharacterization of new layered and inorganic open framework phases.
